Requesting a replacement credit card

Learn when and how to replace an existing Capital One credit card and how long it will take to receive it.

If your card is missing, compromised, expired or damaged, you may want to request a replacement. One of the most convenient ways to request a replacement card is in the Capital One app or on the website. Depending on your circumstances, here’s what you can expect throughout the process.

Determine if you need a replacement card

If your card is temporarily misplaced
Use Card Lock to prevent your card from being used. If you find your card, you can unlock it and continue to use it as normal.

If your card is lost or stolen

Report your card lost or stolen if you can't find it or think it’s been stolen. Capital One will immediately restrict the card, then issue a replacement with a new card number.

If you notice unauthorized or fraudulent charges

If you notice a posted transaction that you and your other account users don’t recognize, you should report a problem.

One of the most convenient ways to report a problem with a charge is in the Capital One app or on the website. To start your fraud claim, select the transaction from your recent transaction list. Then select Report a problem and answer questions about the charge.

If your card is damaged

If your card is chipped, cracked, bent, or otherwise damaged, you can request a replacement in the Capital One app, free of charge.

If your card is about to expire

You may not need to request a replacement card—your new card should arrive about 4 weeks before your expiration date. We’ll send it to the address in your profile, so make sure your contact information is up to date.

When you request a replacement card

  • If you reported your card lost or stolen, you won’t be able to use your physical card. However, eligible customers can access a virtual card through the Capital One Mobile app, or after signing in online. You can also pay for purchases with your digital wallet.

  • Your replacement card should arrive in 4-6 business days.

  • Activate your card immediately upon receipt.

  • Update automatic or recurring payments with any changes to your card number, verification number or expiration date. If you replace a damaged card, your card info will not change. To help get you started, Capital One has compiled a list of your recurring charges and other places your card may be stored online.

Your replacement card should arrive in 4-6 business days.

If your card is temporarily lost or misplaced, use the Capital One app or visit the website to lock your card while you look for it—that allows you to prevent any new purchases.

If you find your card, you can unlock it and continue to use it as normal. If you know your card has been lost, report it immediately.

If your credit card was damaged, lost or stolen, you can secure your account and get a new card.

  • Report the issue right away by signing in to your account online or on our mobile app. Your previous card will be deactivated.
  • Lock your card so no one else can use it, and then go ahead and request a replacement card if you’re unable to find it. If you are receiving a replacement card for any other reason, your previous card will be deactivated once you activate your new one.
  • Use the new card for all future transactions.

Depending on the reason for the replacement, you may still be able to access your account and make purchases while waiting for a replacement card.

  • If your card is about to expire, it will work up until the last day of the month in which it expires, even if you’ve activated the new one.
  • If your card was damaged, your account remains active. You can use your existing card number for online transactions or digital wallet payments.
  • If your card was lost, compromised or stolen, for your security, the existing card will be deactivated. You can still access and manage your account online or on the mobile app.
